Sudeok Temple: Legend of Virgin Deoksung and Embroidered Socks

  • Explanation

Sudeok Temple is the only Baekjae temple that still exists in present. Before, it was regarded as high as the Emperor of China, boasting its masonry technique of Baekjae Dynasty.

Looking around Sudeok Temple, you may be able to find hidden treasures. Most notables are four treasures (四物) of Sudeok Temple. The first treasure is a bell of Buddhist temple that weighs about 3,500kg. It is still marvelous to see such a heavy bell can be even hanged. The rest three treasures are Beopgo, Mokeo and Unpan (instruments used in Buddhist ceremonies) inside of Beopgogak. Beopgogak is a drum that is made of skin of bull and cow to balance yin and yang. Mokeo is a wooden fish with its eyes wide open, nipping cintamani in mouth. Lastly, Unpan (or cleat) looks like cloud, painted with very colorful colors.

Sudeok Temple is a typical temple built on mountain, placing the main temple at the highest by building stonework along the hill of Deoksung Mountain. It is still a mystery but the deeper you approach to the main temple after passing the front gate and Hwanghajeongru, the more you will feel profound beauty of Sudeok Temple. ‘Iyeopseonmun’ written by the most venerable Buddhist nun Ileyop also described the main temple as the most beautiful wooden building in the world.

Chungeui Temple, where it embodies the spirit of Martyr Bonggil (Maeheon) YUN

  • Explanation

Chungeui Temple is guarded by two lions at both sides of road that leads to the Martyr YUN’s shrine. YUN was born to be the eldest son of 5 sons and 2 daughters in Deokseongmyeon, Yesan District. After his passing at the age of 25 on December 19th, 1932 in a foreign land, his body was only returned in 1946 after Korea was liberated from Japanese Colonial Rule.

Stepping down from the shrine, there is ‘Martyr Bongil YUN Memorial Hall’ on the right side, where one can appreciate his life. This memorial hall was built in 2001, playing an important historic place of education with systematic exhibition presentation.

One thing to note in particular is to watch the scenes with Magic Vision about the tombstone accident and reenactment where Mr. YUN made a decision to participate in the Enlightment Movement and

Magic Vision shows 11:19 scenes of Martyr YUN's from his youth to the moment of his passing. This Magic Vision provides visual experience to the youngsters about historic facts far more effective than tens of books about Mr. Bongil YUN.

He wrote 丈夫出家生不還 to pray for the independence of Korea before he applied for asylum, which cannot be found until now. So his words were assembled from other writings to display the phrase. Chungeuisa is a museum that the young can learn about Korea’s history and culture, not to mention a shrine to commemorate those who were loyal to the nation.

Chusa Jeonghui KIM’s House, one of notable calligrapher in late Choseon Dynasty

  • Explanation

Chusa's Jeonghui KIM’s house was built with the main building, detached house, gate section and ancestral shrine. The main building is ‘’-shaped house that consists of 6-section hall and two main rooms and a room on the opposite side, kitchen, inner gate, side door and storage.

Each main room and room on opposite side has narrow wooden porch outside of rooms. The kitchen ceiling is built with a loft. Also, there is a hall between the main room and the room on opposite side. The size of his house is quite large even in present.

The jammed house structure may seem suffocating but there are wisdom found in many places. One of those is to built a big window on the entrance gate such that sunlight can enter from the garden, as a way of increasing openness. This house was built based on the philosophy of Confucianism strictly separating the main room from detached house (men’s part of a house), but his practical view as a scholoar of the Realist School of Confucianism can be found in most unexpected place.

It is the stone pillar that was engraved with Stone Year (石年) just in front of terrace stone of detached house. This stone pillar is a solar watch that can measure the time using the shape of shade, which was personally made by Chusa himself.

One of the notable things in Chusa’s house is ‘Sehando (歲寒圖)’ that Chusa painted as a return of book that his disciple Mr. Sangjeok YI bought from Yeonggyeong, China. ‘Sehando’ describes the will of Chusa who overcame the solidarity in exile, and continued to devote to what he must and can do.

Yedang Reservoir where you can watch sparkling sunlight

  • Explanation

It is the biggest reservoir in South Korea, named after Ye from Yedang District and Dang from Dangjin City. If you are a fishing lover, this is a must place to visit. As the biggest reservoir fishing place, it attracts a number of visitors from Korea. For its charm, it was chosen as ‘one of 100 the most beautiful rivers in South Korea’, among rivers, lake, valley, waterfall, etc. researched by Korea River Association from July 2007.
The selection was based on a year-long screening about nature, landscape, hydrophilism, ecology, history, cultural aspect, etc. However, the most important asset of Yedang Reservoir is to watch and feel the landscape for yourself, not to hear it from others. It is the best fishing place in South Korea, where families can enjoy their past time together because it was built with various supplementary facilities such as large parking lot, camping site, sculpture park, tracking lane, fountain, etc. In addition, not to mention winter fishing, it is still possible to enjoy fishing even from early spring to late fall. There are all kinds of freshwater fishes including carp, eel, snakehead, Korean bullhead, weather fish, etc.
